We previously produced work from London, and prior to this, Ghent, where we established our practice in 2020. How we work — No matter how small, we approach every project with rigour, attention to detail and imagination, with the aim of creating moments of clarity and delight within everyday environments. The scope of our projects to date range from furniture, interior design, exhibition design and domestic scale projects, to larger urban scale projects for cultural clients. Through every project, we seek to read the existing qualities and histories of places, designing architecture of social and urbanistic continuity. Who we are — Ben Rea is an ARB-certified architect. In his eight years working for award winning practices around Europe, Ben has worked mainly with public sector clients, delivering ambitious and complex cultural projects for the cities of Brugge and Bradford, and social housing in London. He has also gained experience working on smaller scale domestic, and exhibition design projects with Alvar Aalto medal winning architect, Marie Jose Van Hee. Emma Filippides is a designer, writer and researcher. For a decade, she has initiated and managed projects in the architectural field, including publications and exhibitions. As an experienced new projects manager, Emma has a strategic and creative eye for assembling tenders and design competitions, developed through her work on bids for significant cultural projects internationally for Pritzker-prize winning architecture practice, David Chipperfield Architects. The interior was only partially finished, offering the opportunity to create a more coherent identity and architectural character to interiors that were fairly overlooked and underdeveloped. While equipped with an open plan living room and terraces on each floor, the apartment lacked any sense of generosity in terms of spatial connection between rooms, height, artificial and natural light, storage provision and the quality of finishes. The refurbishment of the interior has operated on three levels: the introduction of transformative new cuts and openings to create a mezzanine study, internal windows and double height stair; flooding the space with continuous oak flooring and sills throughout; and the insertion of a series of bespoke built-in furniture pieces. The pavilion on Haggerston Road is a gift to the street, but it is also a way to probe the bureaucratic frameworks involved in creating and maintaining a new public space. Transforming the blank wall into a hospitable space, awnings that are evocative of lively market stalls peel up from the facade to provide shade, while long timber benches create a place for people to use at all times of day or night. The flexibility of its design enables No. 23 to tap into the daily public activities of Haggerston, while official street closures could aid more concentrated activation of both the street and rooftop elements of the structure. A simple modular timber structure, the dimensions of which are based on the width of the reused Tetra Pak panels, is rapidly scalable. As the reused materials are not cut or altered in any significant way, the majority of the pavilion can be disassembled and stored for use in future constructions. The exhibition was designed as an extension of the social and spiritual motifs often appearing in the artist's work, inviting visitors into a more active form of participation with the artworks. We have developed a family of furniture elements: lecterns, plinths, stands and curtains. These pieces, inspired by the small scale furniture of ecclesiastical ceremonies, echoes the classical language of the artworks and takes on a monumental presence within the galleries. <img and installation designStatus: CompletedYear: 2017 The town of Fredericia was founded in 1650 by Frederick II as both a fortified, military town and as an early example of social utopianism. The new town was the first in Denmark to allow Huguenots, Jews and debtors to own property. This workshop for EASA (European Architecture Student Assembly) engaged with the theme of 'hospitality’ by returning to the subject of placeless people as a reflection of recent refugee resettlement in the area. The project draws from the rich typologies of nomadic peoples to create an inhabitable research vessel to better understand the attitudes and prejudices of the town. Through a partnership with Fredericia Youth House and the local municipality, we were able to programme the vessel with a lively series of events, and residencies, pulling the structure to sites of social and strategic importance, in the manner of a religious or carnivalesque procession. The workshop was designed and co-tutored with Louis Pohl Koseda and Remi Busquet. We brought it to life not only for the Day of Architecture, but as an additional layer that will remain imprinted on the building while it awaits renovation as a new amenity for Huis Perrekes, a local care organisation offering support and residence for people suffering from dementia. The installation looks to mark the village rectory with the memories and rituals of Huis Perrekes as a signal of activities to come. At Huis Perrekes, living itself is treated as a form of art; an ongoing experiment of highly thoughtful and empathetic work developed by carers, musicians, artists, architects, residents’ families and volunteers. In order to produce this installation, we spent time at the Villa of Huis Perrekes observing, drawing and photographing. Through these interactions, we illuminated some of the stories behind certain objects and daily rituals that hold a deeper meaning. We treated light as the primary transformative element in the space, mediating the material and immaterial. Excerpts of conversations are illuminated on the windows of the three rooms of the installation, transforming with the natural light and atmospheric conditions outside the house. White sand covers the rectory interior, leaving traces of those who pass through. Outside, a slender ribbon of chalk text wraps around the building’s exterior with the message ‘you are beautiful, here is beautiful’. These warm words, borrowed from a resident of the Villa, act as a rhythmic mantra to hold the building, a gesture towards its future intention. Cagliari, SardiniaYear: 2019 House of the travelling dancer was a scenography design developed in collaboration with Carovana SMI, a dance theatre company from Cagliari, for the youth festival Festa delle Creatività Giovanili. The project seeks to appropriate sites of potential within the city for performance, using architectural themes ‘floor’, scenography’, and ‘found space’ to domesticate previously underutilised sites. Using these elements the city is conceptualised as a series of domestic rooms or ‘domus’ with spatial characteristics: together/apart, covered/open, new/reused. By identifying spaces of performative potential in the historic city, focus could turn to the less picturesque modernist ‘new centre’, where the current house of Carovana is located. The project culminates in the appropriation of semi private/vehicular space for communal use. By connecting the tram station and an adjoining parking yard, I created a spatially complex series of rooms for the dance company within the city block which would contain studios, subsidiary services, an exhibition space and a new station bar.
